In 1961, While pastoring Calvary Baptist Church in Athens, Georga, Rev. James W. Brock Sr., along with his wife Frances, felt God's calling to begin a special Ministry. With a heart for young people and a view of the world's sinful influences, Preacher and Mrs. Brock, with many others knew that God wantd them to do something to meet the needs of the youth of that day. The Lord soon provided a place where they could bring kids for activities and Bible study. It began as a two week Bible camp by renting a portion of the land where the camp now stands. Since 1961, thousands of young people have accepted the Lord as their personal Savior. Little did anyone know, that many, many years later, and many precious souls later, Camp Maranatha would still exist today.

Maranatha is a Greek word used in 1 Corinthians 16:22, which means, "The Lord cometh." This si the foundation for the Camp's mission of preparing people for the Lord's return. Everyone who comes to camp has the oportunity to hear the Good News that Jesus Christ died on the cross for their sins. As a help to the local chruch, the mission of Camp Maranatha is threefold: to win the lost to Christ, to disciple Christians, and to provide Christian fellowship. This is why Camp Maranatha was started, and this is why Camp Maranatha will continue.

"How are the needs met?" "Does it cost a lot to attend?" These are typical questions asked. It is quite a joy to tell people that Camp Maranatha does not charge the campers anything to attend. A five-dollar registration is requested to reserve a place. Preacher Brock, in his vision for an outreach to young people, did not want anything to hinder a young person's opportunity to come and hear the Gospel, not even money! However, the camp does have many expenses. The operation of the camp rests solely on God's ability to meet the needs. The financial resources come from churches and individuals that have a burden for this ministry. and the young people of today. Camp Maranatha is truly a testimony of God's faithfulness.
